She shared her budget with Insider, including her most important cost: a high-quality customer experience that encourages returning clients. Today, Dixson manages a $1,230 monthly budget to keep the salon running and has booked more than $30,000 in sales since opening her studio nine months ago. In December 2021, she moved into her own salon space in Indianapolis, Indiana, and launched her business, called That1Studio, a semi-private studio that offers shampoo, conditioning, blowout, and braiding services. In order to do that, she had to build a robust following on social media, learn from other stylists, and develop her personal brand - steps other salon owners told her were vital to creating a sustainable business. She graduated in 2020 and landed her first job at a local salon, but her goal was to open her own business one day. In 2019, after graduating high school, she enrolled in cosmetology school at the Aveda Fredric's Beauty Institute.Īveda's teachings focused heavily on the business side of the beauty industry, Dixson said. When Tillie Dixson was 18, she was trying to decide which college to attend but was reluctant to spend money on a degree that she wouldn't use.
